Mayor happy with visitor numbers
The mayor appeals to the public to adhere to safety precautions to ensure an incident-free festive season.
THE mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Mxolisi Kaunda, is excited that visitors are flocking to the city for the holidays. This was announced by eThekwini’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, despite the fact that swimming is prohibited in many beaches because of water contamination.

According to Mayisela, during the week of December 5 to 11, the city recorded 293 520 beachgoers. On the South Coast, only Amanzimtoti Main and Pipeline beaches are open to bathers. The rest have tested dangerously high for E.coli which stems from sewage contamination.
“Bathing at beaches is allowed from 06:00 to 18:30 daily. The public is not allowed to swim at night as beaches are not manned by lifeguards. Toilets and ablution facilities are open from 06:00 to 20:00, from Monday to Thursday. From Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, the service is available from 06:00 to 22:00,” said Mayisela.
During the same week, metro police responded to various cases related to non-compliance of eThekwini’s by-laws, including illegal parking, nudity, sleeping on the beach, public drinking, bathing in non-bathing areas, fighting, dogs not being leashed, and general disturbance.
Mayisela said the mayor appeals to the public to adhere to safety precautions to ensure an incident-free festive season. “We are happy with the good conduct of the public, especially at Durban beaches. We encourage the public to continue to co-operate with the police and other law enforcement and municipal staff, including lifeguards, to ensure their safety,” he concluded.
