Sardine run quietens down … for now

This year the sardines started making their way up the coast earlier than expected.

FOLLOWING the sardine activity of June 3, it has been quiet around Amanzimtoti with no further shoal sightings.

The early shoals started making their way along the east coast early, hitting Umkomaas on June 2, and Winklespruit, Warner Beach, and Isipingo Beach on June 3. Most fisherfolk were surprised as sardines were not expected for at least another week.

On June 4, activity was reported in Pennington Beach, but none of the sardines reached Amanzimtoti.

Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) has reminded the public that the eThekwini municipality has issued an advisory that beaches along the southern parts of Durban have been closed as the shark nets have been lifted.
