Unique beach metro police unit launched

The Coastal and Tourism Policing Unit is responsible for patrolling 100km of coastline between Clansthal in the south, and Tongaat Beach in the north.

TO CREATE a safe environment and to boost tourism, eThekwini Municipality has launched what it has called South Africa’s first Coastal and Tourism Policing Unit.

Mayor Cyril Xaba announced this during the recently held Mayoral Tourism Trade Stakeholder Engagement in Durban. He said the unit is responsible for patrolling 100km of coastline between Clansthal in the south, and Tongaat Beach in the north.

“This pioneering initiative forms part of a broader safety strategy to ensure residents and visitors enjoy secure beaches. The goal is to sustain and strengthen this unit, setting a national benchmark for beach and tourism safety,” said Xaba.
