World Ice Skating day made for a phenomenal day for both skaters and spectators alike as they celebrated the magic of the ice.
IT WAS magic on ice as 24 figure skaters, each bringing their own personality and passion onto the ice at Galleria Ice Rink, recently joined the global celebration of World Ice Skating Day.

Organised by the International Skating Union (ISU), World Ice Skating Day is celebrated every December with one simple purpose, to celebrate the pure joy of ice skating. It is a day about fun as opposed to medals and triumph. A day where figure skaters and members of the public step onto the ice side-by-side, united by smiles, courage, and the freedom of movement. No matter your age, background, or skating experience as the ice belongs to everyone.
Chairperson of the South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) of KZN, Jo Cossavella, said that the two dozen skaters planned routines for expression, not perfection, to show how skating can be graceful, powerful, playful, and emotional all at once. She added that many watching from the sidelines were inspired to take to the ice themselves.
“Before long, the ice was opened to everyone. Spectators, parents, siblings, friends, and first-time skaters were invited to step onto the rink and join in. Games like statue, musical chairs, and relay races filled the ice with laughter and cheers. People who had never skated before found themselves gliding hand-in-hand with those more confident, proving that joy grows when it is shared. Ice skating has a special way of lifting the spirit. It strengthens the body, sharpens balance, and builds confidence, but more than that, it makes people feel alive,” said Cossavella.
She explained that stepping onto the rink does not have to be for just one day a year, as the Galleria Ice Rink is open for public skating sessions, offering a space where families can make memories, friends can try something new, and individuals can discover a passion they never knew they had.
“For those who feel inspired to take it further, joining a figure skating club opens the door to learning, growth, and belonging in a supportive skating community. So lace up your skates, take that first step onto the ice, and let yourself feel the joy. Whether you glide, wobble, or laugh your way around the rink, you’ll discover what so many already know, ice skating isn’t just a sport. It’s an experience worth coming back to,” concluded Cossavella.
