Young artists get to work on Doonside mural [Pics]

Budding artists at Amanzimtoti High School took their supplies and partnered with various local organisations along the way to create a mural.

ONE of the most recognisable parts of Amanzimtoti is its murals strewn across town, from beautiful blue ocean-themed designs, to recognisable landscapes and displays of town pride and patriotism.

With that in mind, the Doonside Mural project came about as a community-driven initiative led by Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti, in collaboration with the Amanzimtoti High School art class, involving learners from Grades 8 to 12.

On February 3, the artists gathered at the Doonside bridge off Rockview Road, which leads to the beach.

The project is a shining example of community collaboration, bringing together the Amanzimtoti Fire Brigade, Amanzimtoti Beach Management, Sapphire Coast Tourism, CCPO, Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti and local artist, Christine Andrews, who generously shared her expertise and insights with the learners.

Romy Wenzel, of Sapphire Coast Tourism, explained that the bridge was carefully selected as it poses no risk to road traffic, providing a safe environment for learners to work.

“The bridge serves as a popular crossing used by Gary’s Horses, a well-loved Sapphire Coast Tourism attraction that draws visitors from across South Africa and abroad for scenic beach horse rides throughout the year. This project proudly showcases what can be achieved when community, creativity, and collaboration come together to enhance and uplift a shared public space,” said Wenzel.

Amanzimtoti High School art teacher, Yasteel Ramcheron, said he took on the project as it is good for the learners, who get to venture out of the classroom, and offers them an opportunity to work on something in the community.
