The event, hosted by eThekwini Municipality in partnership with the KZN Department of Education, saw learners from the Umlazi District dominate the competition, taking all three top positions.

More than 100 schools participated in the programme, with learners from all districts across eThekwini. The competition, open to learners in grades four to six, is designed to promote reading, academic excellence, and public speaking skills.

In addition to the spelling bee, a quiz competition was also held. To participate, learners had to read a prescribed list of books and were later tested to confirm their comprehension.

Senior manager of Libraries and Heritage, Tebogo Mzizi, said the initiative is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to nurture a culture of reading.

“The competition promotes good reading habits, academic excellence, and public speaking proficiency among learners,” she said.

Mzizi added that the city’s libraries host annual reading competitions, spelling bees, and quizzes to encourage literacy and lifelong learning.
