Outcome of tenpin leagues eagerly awaited

Four times during the year, all leagues get together to contest a mini tournament to determine which day’s league is the best.

AMANZIMTOTI Tenpin Bowling Club’s year is rapidly moving towards the end-of-season closure when the bowlers make way for the Christmas visitors to our town for their holidays.

Four times during the year, all leagues get together to contest a mini tournament to determine which day’s league is the best. For the last two years, this achievement has been annexed by the Dolphin Doubles (Thursday) league of president Collin Farrow.

He decided to rub the salt into the wounds of the other leagues by having ‘inter-league champions 2011 and 2012’ embroidered on their shirts. This was greeted with derision by the other leagues.

The final result for the year is only announced at the club’s annual general meeting so one is not permitted to disclose the details of the winners but it can be said that the final round of the tournament was won by the Strikers (Tuesday) league. Whether this was sufficient to unseat the previous winners remains to be seen.

Another tournament held this past weekend was the monthly ‘swipe card’ final. This is normally a well supported event with a kettle braai awarded to the best bowler on a total pinfall basis.

Unfortunately only nine bowlers participated but all the big guns came out in force. Seven of these participants came from the master bowlers (over 50) ranks, where Collin Farrow showed his speed out of the starting blocks with a good 223, followed by Bronwen Elbourne on 217 and dad Len and Carol Farrow on 200.

Unfortunately Collin seemed to have a stamina problem and battled over the next two games, while Len Elbourne – by now well warmed up – shot a 239 with Bronwen on 212 and 12-year-old Ethan Irmscher on 219. Carol maintained her pace through the second and third games, bowling 202 and 223.

When the dust settled after the fifth game and the points were tallied and verified, it was discovered that Len Elbourne had held on to win the event with 1,052 pins followed by Collin 1,038, Bronwen on 1,033, Carol Farrow 1,004 and Ethan Irmscher on 991. Congratulations to the winners.

Members are reminded that the annual general meeting will take place on 7 December at Amanzimtoti High School. Purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment as seating is limited.
