Women’s mutton competition set to re-start at Toti BC

Toti Bowls Club is all set to re-start the popular monthly mutton competition for women on Sunday, 26 January 2014.

TOTI Bowling Club is all set to re-start the popular monthly mutton competition for women on Sunday, 26 January 2014.

The format is nominated fours and the cost is R15 per person. The form is already on the notice board, so enter your team now.

The first round of the annual men’s nominated pairs competition kicked off this weekend with a total of nine games being played.

In a close tussle, Greg McLeod and Doug Joubert entertained the gallery with some good bowls to beat Vince Phaal and Nelson Pati. In another “take no nonsense” game between father and son in rival teams, Robbie Roberts and Trevor Dempsey beat son Mike Roberts and Adie Fuller by two shots. Ray Robinson and his team-mate Mike Groom were victorious over Clive Frank and Boet Els.

In other results, Jerry Gertzen and Neville Roscoe beat Bill Williams and Al McGregor, while the team of Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder succeeded over Dallas Davis and Les ‘Snoopy’ Brown. Owen Turner and Gustav Somers combined their talents to become the winners over Peter Labuschagne and Kokkie de Kock. Glen Scorgie and Mike Pitchers succeeded over Ian Shearer and Ken Leech while Neil Oberholzer and Brian Crause were the winners against Vince Marriot and Hennie van der Poel.

The upset of the day was when Alf Bingham and Andrew Pearce had a very comfortable win over Ian Mills and Eric Klopper. Round two of this competition is carded for Saturday, 7 December, but if you are available to play sooner, arrange with competition secretary beforehand.

In the women’s annual drawn trips Delysia Mitchley’s team of Jean Alexander and Tokkie de Kock successfully played their first round against Marion Crouch, Adrienne Robbins and Michele Pitchers. In a second round play-off the team of Mardi Dovale, Marie van der Walt and Betty Sawyer were defeated by Robyn Hutton and her team-mates, Jane Coetzee and Lys McDonald.

Four monthly social competitions were played this week, starting with the women’s trips, which was won by Mardi Dovale, Amanda Ninow and Denise Ingram. Coming in second place were Doreen Salmond, Bobby Stewart and Adrienne Robbins, with the second session prize awarded to Nita Meumann, Cathy du Plooy and Val de Kok. The 100’s board was won by Denise Ingram.

Coy Schrauwen and Clive Hambley were the winners of the men’s nominated 2-4-2 this month.

Coming second on a count-out were Lofty van Tonder and Micky Roche. Hennie van der Poel and Les John won the second session, and Denny Denysschen the 100 board.

The ever-popular Friday afternoon game of mixed 2-4-2’s was won this month by Heather Brown and Doug Joubert, with Lofty van Tonder and Robyn Hutton finishing a very close second. Here the first session prize went to Pete Shepard and Amanda Ninow with Dave Lombard and Doreen Salmond winning the second session. The 100 board was won this time by Keith Berry.

The fourth monthly competition played this week was the men’s mutton. The honours were taken by Mike Dovale, Neville Roscoe, Pete Shepard and Eric Bingham. The runners-up were D Gardner, P Steele, B Pascoe and E Miller. Second session was won by the team of T Morgan, D Davis, B Henderson and M Pitchers. D Gardiner won the whiskey draw and M Roberts won the 100 board.

At TGIF Keith Berry was the lucky winner of the meat, while Val de Kok and Neville Roscoe won the wine. The winner of the attendance draw was tab 150, Duncan Wright, but as he was not present the money rolls over to R150 for next week.

This week’s birthday members are Cathy Harding, Denny Denysschen, Michael Fountain, Chris Whitlock and Lesley Stephens-Viviers. To members who are absent because of health problems we wish you a speedy return to strength.

Condolences are also sent to the family of Martin Inglis, a long-time member of the club who passed away suddenly last week.

Novices are invited to enter for the Port Natal novice singles competition to be held in 2014. The entry list is on the notice board and entry fees to be paid to Liz Morgan-Davies.

Dates to diarise: On Saturday, 30 November is the first round of women’s drawn pairs at 1.30pm; on Sunday, 1 December is the moths picardy bazooka charity morning mixed drawn fours tabs must be in by 8.30am, dress casual, prizes for every contestant. Enter names on list on notice board;

On Tuesday, 3 December will be the women’s 2-4-2, leads to bring snacks; on Friday, 6 December is the men’s scroungers, three more male players needed (the organisers learnt their lesson last month); On Saturday, 7 December is the women’s turkey day. On Sunday, 8 December is the men’s turkey day.

On Sunday, 15 December is the big chicks, five teams have a bye, check board to confirm your game.

On Monday, 16 December is the men’s verses women’s entry list on board. On Saturday, 11 January 2014 first round of women’s drawn fours.
