Small AGM turnout at AGC elects new committee

98th annual general meeting of the Amanzimtoti Golf Club took place on Monday.

THE 98th annual general meeting of the Amanzimtoti Golf Club took place on Monday, and was attended by a smallish number of members, which was rather disappointing as there was a lot to be discussed.

It would have been great to have more members present to hear the year-end reports as well as hear the women’s presentation on the inter-club competition taking place at Amanzimtoti in October 2014.

The KZNLGA women’s inter-club competition is the longest running women’s golf event in South Africa. Between 250 and 280 women will compete for the honours, playing three days of foursome golf.

The spin-off to the club, and indeed to the whole community, will be substantial as these women come from all over KZN and will need accommodation, meals and so on. However, like everything in life, you reap what you sow – with this in mind the club urges the members of AGC and the Toti community in general to support the planning and execution of this wonderful event.

The committee for the year ahead is Mike McGregor, chairman, Cecil Heydenrych, vice chairman. The captaincy will be undertaken by Jason Moriarty and Bester Swart as a team effort, the treasurer is Colleen Smit, and Errol Woods retains the green-keeper mantle.

Jacqui Porrill is also on the committee in her position as women’s captain.

Wednesday’s IPS competition attracted a field of 30 players, and Jorgie Jorgensen led the field home with a fine 40 points, followed by Mark Bingham on 37 points and Brian Stephen in third place on 36 points.

Friday’s sundowner nine hole competition was contested by 41 players. First place went to A Sphwerth on 23 points on a count-out from Steve Chetty. Third spot went to Chris Coetzee on 22 points from S Mbambo, also 22 points.

On Saturday the women played combined stableford, and Jacqui Porrill and Jebby Dyson won the day by way of a count-out, with charmain Stone and Ina de Boer also shooting 66 points to finish second. There were two 2-clubs on the day, namely Estelle Binnekade and Jacqui Porrill on the seventh and fourth holes respectively.

The men played IPS with a smallish field of 65 players. Topping the scoreboard was N Vogen on 42 points. In second, third and fourth places, all on 39 points, were Gerry Motley, Clive Hill and Peter Avellini. Mike McGregor beat Howard Ash oco to take fifth spot on 38 points.

The nearest the pins prizes went to Nic Brits (fourth) and Mervyn Naidoo (15th). The jackpot and attendance prizes carry over to next week.

On Sunday the Rhodies came to town, or at least to Amanzimtoti Golf Club.

A wonderful day was had by all 104 players, and AGC appreciates their custom of the club and course.

Next year is both the club’s centenary and the women’s inter club, and fundraising will be the order of the day for the two landmark events. To this effect, the women host the annual rose and thorns competition on Monday, 16 December. Contact the club on 031-902-1166 to book a spot.
