Small claims UGC Titan title

There will be nearest the pin prizes as well as the straightest drive down the 18th.

THE e “Clash of the Titans” is over for another year and it’s congratulations to Robbie Small, who is the 2014 matchplay champion of Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC).

It’s commiserations to Viv Naicker who put up a tremendous challenge for Robbie on Sunday afternoon, ending on the 16th hole 3 and 2.

The road to these championships has been a long one and it’s well done to all the players who were chosen on merit from the club champs the previous weekend to participate in the matchplay. Their loyalty to the club is unquestioned, some members traveling great distances to play golf and the club thanks you.

Five Umkomaas women, captain Annette Thorold, Annette Gillett and Lesa Vergottini (Mkuhla team) and Sabiha Bacaus and Michelle van der Merwe (Umdoni team) were chosen to play in the inter region tournament with their first match up in Dundee last weekend. The Mkuhla team didn’t play as well as they would have liked but they still qualify to play for the inter region plate in June. The Umdoni team won their matches and will go on to play for the trophy, also in June in Maritzburg. These teams are chosen from women from a number of golf clubs from Amanzimtoti down as far south as Port Shepstone and Southbroom and are to be congratulated for their tenacity, camaraderie and friendship built up over the years. It must be remembered that the Umkomaas girls only make up a part of the whole teams. Congratulations to you all.

It is not often that a member from another golf club gets a mention in the UGC report but a youngster from a golf club little further south played in the Telkom Business PGA champs in Johannesburg over the weekend, doing very well by all accounts. Prinavin Nelson tied for 34th place at -5 for the tournament. Congratulations to him on this great achievement and UGC wishes him much success in future.

Wednesday was the Weiss VW midweek competition and the club welcomed visitors Jos Matthysen, Serfaas van Niekerk, Wik van Wyk and Maurice Chelin, past captain of Natal Nomads to the competition. It was so nice to see Sue and Peter Boshoff back down in South Africa after spending a few months at their home in Zimbabwe. The winner and taking 1st prize on a count out was Eric Morsner on 40 points from Cedric ‘snake-hips’ Kruger who had to be satisfied with second place, also on 40 points. In third slot was Andy Davidge on 38 points with visitor, Serfaas van Niekerk in fourth place with 37 points, counting out Johan Hugo into fifth spot. Wik van Wyk was in sixth place with 36 points with Lesa Vergottini in seventh place, who counted out both Fred Welch and Roddy Mc Gibbon, all with 35 points.

Being the first Saturday of the month, it was the Halfway Toyota monthly medal with a few unfamiliar faces in the competition and the prizes. In the A division, Mike Cromhout played the better golf, shooting 71 with Saga Reddy in second place and five shots behind on 76. The B division was won by Tom Naicker on 71 with Micky Eriksen taking second place with 73. In the more popular C division, it was Eric Morsner coming in with a stupendous 61 (great golf, Eric) putting Anil Seepershad in second place and counting out Cedric ‘snake-hips’ Kruger once again, both on 67. A few women were away in Dundee this month but the remaining few played very well. Denise Nell took the honours this time with 73, with Sue Boshoff trailing a bit in second spot on 83. Sue also got the least putts prize with 32 putts.

The jackpot was shared between Ganas Naicker and Anil Seepershad with 10 points, with the hidden birdie still out on the 13th hole and so will be carried over. Saga Reddy was at the club to collect his attendance draw winnings.
