Walker is Toti Cycle Club’s own pied piper

Brennan fell hard and buckled his wheel, but true to the Mambas' nature, attacked the race with no fear.

REMEMBER the story of the Pied Piper?

Well Amanzimtoti Cycle Club’s Barry Walker seems to have a bit of that magic in him.

He left Toti with Brett Smith at 6.30am on Saturday morning and took a nice pedal to the club’s usual meeting spot at Illovo, slowly collecting riders along the way. By the time they left the grass patch, they had a group of 11 mountain bikers along for the outride. The group did a nice enjoyable route up and around Rob’s loop.

On Sunday, there was a good turnout at the Safire Baynesfield MTB Classic. There was a good show of Toti members doing the 45km and 67km races. It was a nice route, although a bit bumpy and hectically dusty. People’s faces were a sight to see at the end of their races. Again, the Toti riders did very well, even after a few mishaps, one being Brennan Anderson riding into Jeremy Thompson at the start of the race. Brennan fell hard and buckled his wheel, but true to the Mambas’ nature, attacked the race with no fear, coming in to the finish in under three hours. Unfortunately there are as yet no official times out. A few of our new riders, bravely conquered the steep climbs of the 45km race and came in with smiles on their faces.

A few people headed out to Virginia trails on Monday morning to enjoy the fun day that Pete Stainbank put on. Everyone walked away with a prize as there were only 12 people out on the trail. This is a great place to take the family for an energetic day out.

The road section of the club decided to lie in on Father’s Day and rather went out to do a good, slow ride on Monday morning, seeing that it was a holiday.

Road rides leave Engen in Rockview Road everyday barring Monday at 5am. There are both organised mountain bike and road rides on the weekends. Contact Caryn on 082-357-5287 for more details about the club.
