Mzimela pockets Widenham Trophy for February

The welcome rain over the last few days has done wonders for the golf course - thanks to Mike and his team for keeping the course in such splendid condition.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club reports that Garth Mulroy played in the Joburg Open at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club last weekend and was lying T6th at the end of the third round, only two shots behind the leader at the time.

This put him into a great position to finish well.

Garth finished his final round with a 72 which kept him up there but Andy Sullivan, the eventual winner finished on -17 which put Garth at T13 with -12. This is great play from Garth and UGC wishes him the very best of luck at his next tournament, the Africa Open followed by the Tshwane Open.

The welcome rain over the last few days has done wonders for the course – thanks to Mike and his team for keeping it in such splendid condition. Positive feedback and comments from various groups recently say a great deal and UGC thanks them for playing the course and enjoying it first hand.

Wednesday’s individual stableford welcomed visitors John and Penny Smith (Jimmy Pickavance’s daughter and son-in-law visiting from the UK) and Dave Rickards, who will be leaving soon to return home to the UK. The winner on this occasion was Peter Williamson on 40 great points, with big Garth Wilyman in second spot with 38 points. Taking third prize this week was Barrie Taylor on 37 points followed by Jimmy Spear in fourth slot, counting out young Fred Brandow, both with 36 points.

Saturday was the Widenham Trophy individual stableford competition where club captain Peter Toward welcomed Gert Luus and son Arno, former member Trevor Adams (nice to see Trevor again), Dennis and Cathy Kamstra and John and Penny Smith to both the competition and prize-giving. February’s winner of the Widenham Trophy was George Mzimela with 40 well-earned points, Hans Beuthe put in a great score on 39 points to take second spot. In third place was Jimmy Pickavance on 37 points with Michelle van der Merwe, doing it for the girls, in fourth place on 36 points. Congratulations to George and all who played in the trophy competition.

The jackpot was scooped up by Hans Beuthe with 12 points. There were only two reported 2 Clubs – Nelson Moonsamy on the fourth and Dean Naicker on the ninth. The hidden birdie was found on the 11th hole but went begging again this week and will be carried over as will the ‘kitty in the non-skills department’ which would have been won if Eric Morsner had stayed just a little bit longer. The football sweep was won by Samantha Alfonso with the Welling FC.

Saturday, 7 March is the Toyota monthly medal for the women and men. There are two groups playing on Sunday, 8 March but there are still times available for social golf in between the groups. The Allerton team is playing at Papwa Sewgolum GC next Sunday. Good luck to them all, may your drives be straight and your putts in the hole.

The quiz nite held last Friday was a tremendous success, all thanks to John Thompson for compiling the questions and overseeing the whole evening. Thanks also to all the players, whose participation in exercising their ‘grey matter’ was much appreciated. Watch this space for news on the next quiz nite.
