Paint team’s prep sets scene for Winkle SLC nipper open day

Anyone from age 7 years and upwards, interested in getting involved in surf lifesaving, are invited to join the activities at Winklespruit main beach.

FROM the turnout and excitement at the Winklespruit Surf SLC open day on Sunday, it can be safely said that the summer season of 2015 is officially open.

Almost 70 nippers, juniors and seniors arrived with parents and friends for the open day supported by the club committee, instructors and trainers.

The action actually started on Saturday with a great turnout of members climbing in to clean and paint the downstairs area and to make final preparations for the arrival of prospective new members and parents. There is reason to believe that the girls who painted the craft room had more paint on themselves than what was applied to the walls. It was great to see hard work and fun being put together.

Sunday morning saw almost perfect weather and sea conditions with a spring tide low allowing the returning nippers and new young guests to start the season with a short swim and walk out to the shallow sand bank under the supervision of their instructors, followed by an obstacle course that added huge fun to the day. They were then taken through the events that form the basis of lifesaving competitions and the morning session ended with some well-deserved food provided by the catering department. Thanks to club manager Pheph Harford and the team for pulling out all the stops to make the new parents feel comfortable.

The seniors and juniors also made use of the shallow water to do some strength training on the sand bank as well as using the great conditions to do crew and driver training on the rescue boat.

As the season has now opened, the club extends an invitation to anyone from age seven years and upwards who are interested in getting involved in the sport of surf lifesaving to go down and join the activities at Winklespruit main beach. Winklespruit SLC caters for nipper, junior and senior age groups and looks forward to seeing the masters back on the beach. Training for all age groups is on Sundays from 8.30am until around 10am.

A reminder that the club is open on Friday evenings and all new and existing members are welcome to join in for sundowners.
