Morsner claims Widenham trophy at UGC

Club champs at Umkomaas Golf Club will be held on Saturday, 16 April and Sunday, 17 April.

IT was so good to see Garth Mulroy find his niche right here on South Africa’s Sunshine Tour, where he obviously feels more comfortable and at home.

He has had two very good weekends of tournament golf, both in South Africa and hopefully Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) will see more of him as well. Last weekend he played in the Eye of Africa Championships, scoring a 70, 67, 69 and a 70 in the final round on Sunday, -2 for the day.

He finished in T6th on -12 and getting better every week. Everyone at UGC wishes him much success in the weeks and months ahead. They would just like to see more of Tim Clark too. The winner, on a play-off, of the Eye of Africa Championships was Jaco van Zyl on -20.

Wednesday’s competition was the usual individual stableford – UGC welcomed Claude Osborne, Mike Pienaar and Benjamin Bosch to the competition, which was won by Dave Kemp on 37 points. Jimmy Spear counted out a few players for second spot, Rob Finlay was third and Roddy McGibbon took fourth place, all on 35 points.

Last Saturday, the club hosted the Widenham trophy, an individual stableford competition and the winner was Eric Morsner on 41 points, with Rob Finlay taking second place, once again, with 40 points. Joe Mkhungo, who hasn’t been seen in a while, was in third spot with 39 points, counting out Johan Hugo into fourth slot, also with 39 points. No-one got more than 10 points in the jackpot, so it will be carried over, as will the hidden birdie (third hole). The kitty for the hidden birdie is heading for the R200 mark – something worth winning. Big Joe was the only player to get a two-club on the fourth hole with John Thompson staying at the club long enough to scoop the attendance draw.

This Saturday, 5 March is the sponsored Toyota monthly medal mug – the time sheets are up on the board with social golf on Sunday, 6 March, not forgetting the family/dog walk around the course next Sunday. There will be a nominal charge for both dogs and humans, with breakfast rolls and water available. There will also be a vet in attendance for the doggies – the humans will have to fend for themselves. Ensure that all animals are all on a leash accompanied by the relevant plastic bags and scoops. Call John on 082-322-4920 or Annette on 082-927-5013 for more information. For tee times on Sunday, call the club on 039-973-1042 to book a time.

Club champs at UGC will be held on Saturday, 16 April and Sunday, 17 April. All the relevant information pertaining to the champs is up on the notice board – read it carefully and put your names down in your division. The women will also play on the same day as the men, so get your names up. There is bound to be some stiff competition between you all.

The Sardine Run is getting closer and closer – the website has been updated, so logon to www.sardinegolf.co.za for more information.
