Pitch up for parkrun’s second ‘birthday’
This is a free event to promote sport, health and well-being
AMANZIMTOTI parkrun celebrates its second birthday on Saturday, 6 August and invites all members of the community to join in this achievement.
“There will be cake, prizes and lots of give-aways for registered participants,” said parkrun’s Claudine Farr.
Parkrun started in 2004 in the UK as the only regular, weekly 5km timed running event in the UK. Bruce Fordyce introduced it to SA in 2011 and the Amanzimtoti event was launched in August 2014 by event director, Claudine Farr. There are currently 81 parkruns that take place each weekend in South Africa and 840 worldwide.
“This is a free event to promote sport, health and well-being among all members of the community, regardless of race, financial means, gender or creed and is suitable for participants of all fitness levels. Contrary to the name, the majority of participants actually walk,” said Claudine.
Participants sign up on the website and using their printed barcode can take part at any parkrun event in the world.
The Toti route starts at 8am every Saturday and finishes in front of the restaurants on the promenade at the main beach. With 1.6km of the course run on the sand, it is one of the more challenging parkruns but affords participants the opportunity to enjoy sea and sand dunes while getting fit.
“This is a purely volunteer-run event and as such volunteers are the lifeblood of a successful parkrun event,” said Claudine. “Therefore if you would like to be part of the action, but don’t feel up to participating why not offer your services?” Contact Claudine via email at amanzimtotidirector@parkrun.com.
