Amanzimtoti Athletics Club runner takes on 50 miller

The 50 Miler event is still a great challenge and provides a stepping stone to those interested in running 100 miles.

Amanzimtoti Athletics Club member, Justin Annells successfully completed the Karkloof 50 Miler Foot Race recently. He completed the race in nine hours and 27 minutes. The 35-year-old joined the club two years ago and has not looked back since.

“It was an awesome experience as I had never done that distance on a trail before. Running through such beautiful scenery really makes it easy to appreciate the route and enjoy what you are doing. The support from the Toti crew also added to the experience as they are great motivators,” said the passionate runner.

The 50 Miler event is still a great challenge and provides a stepping stone to those interested in running 100 miles.

When asked what his athletic achievements have been so far, Justin said, “I don’t have many, but my top three would be Comrades 2019, Delliotes Marathon where I ran my personal best, and the Karkloof 50 Miler.”

He also believes that lockdown positively affected his athletic ability by forcing him to take a break from long distance running.

“My words of encouragement are train hard, but still have fun and live your life. Learn to love the hills, they will be your friend on race day! Training with friends helps a lot, but don’t skip the solo runs, as they keep the mind strong during those tough times in races.”

The general manager trains about two to three times a week and enjoys fishing in his spare time. He hopes to take on many other races in the future.
