Old crew makes waves at KZN Flying 15 Regionals

The oldest crew at the KZN Flying 15 Regionals made a splash, coming in second with their classic yacht on the first day of the competition.

AMONG those who set sail for the KZN Flying 15 Regionals at the Henley Midmar Yacht Club on November 15 to 16 was highly skilled sailor and former Amanzimtoti resident, Rob Finlay, 78, who crewed with the oldest competitor, 78-year-old Anton Ellens.

The pair carved their way through the middle of the pack in a dying breeze to pip Connor McLoughlin, who happened to be the youngest competitor at 18, and his crew.

“We picked up two seconds in the FF regionals this last weekend which was great for an old classic design. Unfortunately, the cost of a new design is out of our league as pensioners,” said Finlay. The pair finished second on the first day of the competition, but ended the weekend in the middle of the pack.
