Veterans of the skies take on bowls [Pics]

South African Air Force Association veterans took to the grounds of the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club to enjoy a fun day of bowling.

THE AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club welcomed veterans from the SA Air Force Association (SAAFA) as they spent the organisation’s 80th anniversary on August 27 fittingly enjoying the lawn-based target sport.

Veterans were divided into two teams. Among the SAAFA members were bowls amateurs and experienced players, much like the biased balls used in bowls, but the skill disparity only made for a more competitive, yet still relaxed and friendly bout between the teams. Some of the members more accustomed to the sport happily showed newer players the ropes.

Steve Bekker, SAAFA country vice-president in KZN, said that 19 members attended the bowls day, including serving members from Air Force Base Durban. He explained that the day serves as a fundraiser for welfare for fellow veterans deserving of assistance.

“It was a really fun day. Our bowls day is always a great day for camaraderie among our members and also gives us a chance to interact with some of the serving members from Air Force Base Durban. In the past, we have had up to 11 beneficiaries which this event does fundraising for. Until recently, there were two, but one died at the age of 99-years-old,” said Bekker.

Every member who attended the bowls day won a prize, with the winners having first choice of the prizes, which ranged from rum and wine, to honey.
