A MIXTURE of excitement and nerves could be felt by each member of the audience as skaters took to the ice in the recent Galleria Figure Skating Club annual competition.

Chairperson of South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) KZN, Jo Cossavella, said that the competition was the culmination of months of hard work and practise.

“There were tiny children bravely taking those slightly wobbly first strokes, teenagers pushing hard for their next big jump and even adults who discovered skating later in life, but can scarcely imagine letting it go. Each skater brought their own story and the ice held them all,” said Cossavella.

Families were bundled up in the stands with coffees in hand recording the action while coaches hovered at the rink barrier offering encouraging nods and rushed reminders.

“There’s something about watching someone move across the ice that stops you for a moment. It might be the quiet scrape of blades, or the way a skater suddenly lifts into a spin as if the ice itself gave them permission. Whatever it is, figure skating has a way of drawing you in before you even realise it. People often talk about the costumes or the music, but the real magic sits somewhere between strength, balance, nerves and creativity,” said Cossavella.

She said that such competitions weave a community together. She encouraged those interested in skating to take the leap, as figure skating has room for everyone.
