All you need to know about renewing a driver’s licence

To avoid long queues at driver’s licence testing centres, motorists are encouraged to make a booking prior to arriving.

MOTORISTS are urged to renew their driver’s licence cards well before they expire to avoid penalties, delays and the inconvenience of applying for a temporary licence. According to the Department of Transport, motorists must renew their licence cards at least four weeks before the expiry date.

Those who miss the deadline will be required to apply for and pay for a temporary driving licence while waiting for their new card to be issued.

Make an appointment

To avoid long queues at driver’s licence testing centres (DLTCs), motorists are encouraged to contact their local DLTC by phone or email to make a booking.

Documents needed

• South African ID book, temporary ID, or valid passport
• A copy of your ID
• Four black-and-white ID photographs (confirm quantity with the DLTC)
• Proof of residential address, such as a utility bill or a bank statement that shows your address
• If you live in an informal settlement, a letter with an official date stamp from your ward councillor confirming your address
• Application fee

What to expect at the DLTC

Drivers renewing their licence do not need to take a driving test. However, applicants will undergo an eye test and have their fingerprints taken. Those who prefer may have their eyes tested by an optometrist in advance and submit the results at the DLTC. If your vision has deteriorated since your previous licence was issued, new conditions may be added to your licence.
