Soccer Challenge an excellent opportunity for Soweto boys

2016 Discovery Walter Sisulu soccer challenge will take place in Soweto.

THE 2016 Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge will be the 14th edition of this popular annual event, which’ll again take place during the December holidays. The actual dates of this year’s event will be from December 1 to 28, at the Nike Football Centre in Soweto.

The tournament will see some 104 teams take to the field in their quest to be named the 2016 champions. They’re split into three categories: 56 teams will compete in the main component, then of the u.17 teams there are 32, with 16 in the women’s category.

With an eye on unearthing the best community talent in the country, some of the Premier Soccer League scouts will be in attendance to witness the local players’ skills on display.

The prestigious soccer challenge is an event that’s become a popular fixture on the Gauteng football calendar, attracting fans from in and around Johannesburg to support their favourite team.

The 2016 campaign brings with it even more excitement, as Soweto-born Bidvest Wits right-winger Sifiso Myeni has been unveiled as the official tournament ambassador.

Having started his career playing in the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge, the 28-year-old is immensely excited to be involved in the initiative.

“As a Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge graduate who grew up in Soweto, I understand that this tournament is a highlight for many amateur players. It has the potential to make their wishes come true; the same way it helped to develop my professional career. I’m honoured to be a part of this family’’ said Myeni.

Chairman of the Soweto Football Association, Phil Mogodi, said that Discovery has done momentous work to date.

“The tournament is making a positive and telling contribution to our football. Since its inception, it has helped the country and SAFA in particular, in unearthing some promising talent – who are the future stars of our country.”

Mogodi added the tournament has in the past lived up to its expectations, in displaying great football talent and this year will be no different. “We look forward to the exceptional 14th edition and urge residents of the Soweto community to support this great development event.”

Reigning 2015 champions, Premier Impala FC, are in for stiff competition this year as they look to defend their title against eager and skilled opponents.
