Women’s safety in spotlight

WITH hijackings an ever-present threat in the South Durban area, Brighton Beach SAP partnered with the Bluff’s Community Orientated Policing (COP) in an anti-hijacking campaign in honour of women’s month.

On the morning of Friday, 16 August, Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux and COP members handed out 2,000 safety guides to women at the intersection of Grey’s Inn and Tara Road.

The guidelines demonstrated how women should react in a hijacking and how to avoid being assaulted or killed. “Your life and the lives of those with you must be your priority; resisting the hijackers may cause them to become violent or even deadly,” said Capt Le Roux.

She suggests following the instructions of the hijackers, without seeming threatening or appearing to call for help. Vicitms are urged to remeber as much detail about the assailants as possible to give to police afterwards. Capt Le Roux said this should be done in a surreptitious way, to not alarm the hijackers.

“Thank-you to the Hillside Mall and the Bluff Towers who also campaigned with me on the day and distributed another 2,000 brochures.”
