Snippet: Measuring for shots is an art and acquired skill and is so often seen being done all wrong. I shan’t go into the details of measuring here. Suffice to say that it should be conducted by someone who at least has been trained in the correct methods, and in a fours match, that duty rests on the shoulders of the third. The third may, however, delegate the responsibility to another member of the team with the approval of the opponent. In pairs matches, the onus is on the lead to measure, and quite often the lead is a newish bowler or even a novice. His skip should ensure that he thus acquires the skills before participating, or be willing to leave all the measuring to his opponent, who hopefully will be competent.
