Shot Wentworth teen dies

Police thanked witnesses who assisted them with positive information that had led to the arrest of the suspects.

A 14-year-old Wentworth boy who was shot on May 4 in Major Calvert Street succumbed to his injuries in hospital, 11 days later.

Cameron Morrow was rushed to Wentworth Hospital after he was shot and police arrested two teenagers suspected of the shooting shortly after the incident.

According to communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, members of Wentworth police Vispol team arrested one suspect immediately after he was identified by witnesses on the scene.

“Later, further information was given to the police of a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and who was an accomplice in the shooting. The teenager was arrested after the police found him in possession of an unlicensed .38 special revolver and ammunition,” Gumede said.

The 16-year-old was charged for being in unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, while the 18-year-old was initially charged with attempted murder. The charge has been changed to murder since the victim succumbed to his injuries.

“Police confiscated the firearm and ammunition. The firearm will be sent to ballistics to establish if it was used in the commission of any other crime. More arrests are imminent,” added Gumede.

Station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commended police officers who made the arrest by acting swiftly after the complaint.

“We also thank the witnesses who assisted police with positive information which had led to the arrest of the suspect. We urge the community to work with police in the fight against crime. Residents must be the eyes and ears and report crime,” added Mtshali.

Cameron was laid to rest on May 20.
