Wentworth police launch manhunt for suspected kidnappers

Police are investigating a case of common robbery. It is alleged that the suspects also attempted to abduct another victim in Wentworth.

POLICE in Wentworth have launched a manhunt for two suspected kidnappers who are seen in a video circulating on social media trying to abduct two women in Merebank.

The women, mother and daughter, were walking along Satara Road in Merebank on September 11 in the afternoon when two unidentified men parked their car on the side of the road ahead of them.

As the women approached from behind, the footage shows the suspects getting out of the vehicle and suddenly chasing after them.

The video also shows the two victims running back in fear. One of the suspects is seen grabbing the daughter’s hand, causing both her and her mother to fall to the ground.

Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said there were four suspects in a dark blue Toyota Corolla.

“They attempted to [abduct] a young woman walking with her mother. Fortunately both women managed to flee and seek assistance from local community members.

“The suspects fled with the victim’s cellphone. It is believed that the vehicle and suspects were seen on Tumi Road in Wentworth where they allegedly tried to abduct another victim,” said Govindasamy.

The incident has sparked anger on social media platforms with people calling for more police visibility in Wentworth and Merebank.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the police are investigating a case of common robbery.

“This has been viewed as a serious matter in Merewent and more visibility, blue light patrols are being done every morning, during the day and in the afternoons.
“School safety is our priority. Police in Wentworth are committed in ensuring that our communities are safe. The police are on the lookout for the suspects and their vehicle,” said Gumede.

The community is urged to report any suspicious vehicles and suspicious people in the area.
