eThekwini mayor welcomes progress on Coedmore Bridge Road upgrades

eThekwini's mayor, Cyril Xaba said the project, which costs R47m, includes the construction of a 150m access road leading to the bridge.

THE mayor of eThekwini Municipality Cyril Xaba expressed his confidence about the significant progress made in repairing and upgrading road infrastructure of Coedmore Bridge Road.

The bridge was opened in August last year following its closure after the 2022 floods that damaged the bridge.

However, Ward 64 councillor Norman Gilbert raised concerns about the poor state of Coedmore Road which leads to Seaview industrial area. He emphasised the urgent need for the City to repair Sarnia Road, which stretches from the bridge to the industrial area.

“The City should also look at the fraction of the road from Coedmore bridge to Sarnia Road. Since this is an industrial area used by heavy motor vehicles, the driving conditions in these roads are terribible. The roads need to be refurbished. There should be phase two of the project that will address the state of the roads,” he said.

Xaba said the project, which costs R47m, includes the construction of a 150m access road leading to the bridge, installation of traffic calming measures, and enhanced surface drainage systems to improve water management.

He was speaking during the Presidential eThekwini Working Group roundtable discussion held on June 11.

Commenting on the water supply issue, he said all bulk water reservoirs, including Durban Heights and Wiggins Treatment Works, remained stable throughout the festive season.

“Our efforts to rejuvenate the inner city are well on track as we continue to rehabilitate major road networks within the CBD. Roads already completed include Sandile Thusi Road, Smiso Nkwanyana Road, Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, Soldiers Way, Market Road and Margaret Mncadi Avenue. Currently, we are refurbishing Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street, previously known as West Street,” said Xaba.

He added that eThekwini is among the few municipalities that are not in arrears with Eskom and Umgeni-uThukela Water for bulk electricity and water purchases.
