Wentworth shooting death toll rises to three

The third person, Nathaniel Thompson, died in hospital, bringing the death toll in the shooting to three.

A man who was attacked with three others in Hime Street in Wentworth on February 11 died in hospital yesterday, raising the death toll to three. Nathaniel Thompson died after he sustained gunshot wounds.

On February 11, the four men were seated outside a flat on Hime Street when an unknown vehicle stopped and two men alighted and started firing shots at the four men.

Ryan Hoys died at the scene, while Thompson, Darnel Driman and the other man were rushed to hospital. Driman died shortly after his arrival in hospital.

The fourth man who was with the deceased was reportedly discharged from hospital the same day.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said three counts of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.

“The motive for the attack is under investigation. The police are following all possible leads, no arrests have been made at this stage,” said Magwaza.

Although the police have not ruled out various motives for the attack, Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu linked the ongoing shootings in Wentworth to gangs and drugs.

Zungu made a statement following the mass shooting of nine people of which two  died in Wentworth last year.

A report from the police indicated that a group of people were seated outside a flat on Major Calvert Street when a grey Mazda 3 vehicle approached them.

Jayden Majority, 20, and Lyden Long, 15 were shot dead while other victims were transported to hospital.

On November 17, police arrested an 18-year-old youth at the Woodville Road flats for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
