As the officer’s patrol vehicle approached the intersection of Beach Road and Tara Road, the sound of multiple gunshots became audible.

The officer stopped at the corner of Cluver Crescent and Tara Road to initiate an assessment of the developing situation. At that moment, a blue Toyota Hilux was observed accelerating southbound on Tara Road.

A member of the public alerted the officer that the person driving the Hilux had reportedly discharged a firearm towards another vehicle, which appeared to be a Toyota Land Cruiser.

On the run

The officer immediately pursued the vehicle.

“During the pursuit, the driver of the Hilux allegedly drove recklessly, travelling at excessive speeds, overtaking motorists dangerously and failing to stop at red traffic signals. The ET member managed to catch up and intercept the suspect’s vehicle.

“The suspect was successfully detained, handcuffed and disarmed. The firearm in his possession was secured to ensure public and officer safety,” said ET Rapid Response in a statement online.

Brighton Beach SAPS officers arrived on site and took over the scene. Additional SAPS units and private security organisations also responded to the scene.

Paramedics provided immediate treatment to the driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser at the scene before the individual was transported to a medical facility for more comprehensive examination and treatment.

The events leading up to the shooting incident are being investigated by SAPS.
