eThekwini intervenes to restore Wiggins water supply
Other interventions include the continuous monitoring of reservoir levels and the deployment of water tankers to the affected communities.
THE eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has implemented a series of interventions to restore water supply to areas affected by interruptions on the Wiggins Gravity System.
The South Coast Augmentation booster pump station is being switched off for approximately four hours each day to allow the Woodlands 3 and 4 reservoirs to recover.
Other interventions include the continuous monitoring of reservoir levels, ongoing field investigations, and the deployment of water tankers to the worst-affected communities.

According to the municipality, these interventions follow water supply interruptions that began on June 26.
These interruptions were caused by low water levels at the Woodlands 3 and 4 reservoirs, which affected the system supplying areas served by the South Coast Augmentation Booster Pump Station.
The interruptions have continued as the reservoirs have not yet recovered sufficiently to maintain a stable water supply.
“Our Water Services teams are working round the clock to identify and resolve the cause of the low reservoir levels. As part of these efforts, sections of the system are being temporarily isolated and closely monitored to allow the reservoirs to recover. Once sufficient water has accumulated, the pumps are restarted and water is gradually restored to affected areas,” said eThekwini in a statement.
As reservoirs recover, supply is being released in a controlled manner.
The Woodlands 3 and 4 reservoirs are expected to recover within 14 days, provided there are no unforeseen challenges.

“Thereafter, it may take a few additional days for the entire system and all reservoirs to stabilise and for normal water supply to be fully restored, depending on water demand and consumption,” said eThekwini in a statement.

Jacobs, Merebank East, Merewent, Austerville, Brighton Beach, Wentworth, Bayhead, Clairwood, Grosvenor, Mobeni, Montclair, Rossburgh, Sea View and Woodlands, Isipingo Beach, Isipingo Hills, Isipingo Rail, Orial Hills, Prospecton Industrial, Umlazi-T section, Malaga Hills, Reunion, Umlazi-V section, Umlazi mission A, Ezimbokodweni, Lotus Park, Malukazi and Malabar, Durban Old Airport, Mobeni West, Reunion, Stanvac, Congella.
