Residents urged to join protest against oil and gas exploration
March for the ocean as corporations such as Shell, SASOL, ENI and Total Energies have started a process to ensure their profits continue by exploring for oil and gas along the South African ocean coastline. This will affect our ocean's health and the livelihoods of many that come from the ocean.
IN conjunction with the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFFFC), being held from November 6 to 18 in Egypt, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) will host a march to protest against oil and gas exploration at Suncoast Beach promenade.
Scheduled for November 11, and expecting to gain the support of hundreds of residents who will join to make their voices heard from 08:30, the march will highlight various concerns.
SDCEA’s founder and director Desmond D’sa said the battle for our oceans and environment has intensified over the last few years.
“Many corporations such as Shell, SASOL, ENI and Total Energies have started a process to ensure their profits continue by exploring for oil and gas along the South African ocean coastline. The impacts of this are immense and affect not only the marine life but fisherfolk who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, surfers, swimmers, traditional healers, and all ocean lovers and users.
“We are highlighting our concerns in response to the conference of the polluters. We the residents of KZN, and all surrounding areas of Durban are taking action to raise awareness about the negative impacts of fossil fuels on the poor and the marginalised along the entire value chain, from extraction to combustion,” said D’sa.
The march has gained the support of ocean users and lovers from Durban and surrounding areas.
Attendees will gather outside the Suncoast Casino beach, on the promenade, and march to the Wedge Beach promenade. Members of SDCEA will then hand over a memorandum to City officials and officials from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).
