House robbery accused gets 15-year sentence

The accused was charged for house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The crime was committed on June 28, 2023.

A robbery accused was sentenced to a lengthy jail term on charges of house robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently.

Makabongwe Mbayi was accused of breaking into a home in Northern Ridge Park in Montclair on June 28, 2023. Mbayi and another suspect who is still at large, broke into the victim’s house and held the house owner at knife point, demanding cash.

Mbayi and his accomplice took the victim’s belongings including his firearm, and fled the scene.

According to a statement issued by Montclair police, the victim opened a case at the police station immediately after the incident.

The case was assigned to Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini to conduct further investigations.

Montclair police said in a statement, “Sergeant Dlamini worked tirelessly to ensure that no stone was left unturned. The first suspect [Mbayi] was arrested in KwaMashu E Section. He had the firearm in his possession.

He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court several times after his bail application was opposed and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. The management of the Montclair Police Station applauded Dlamini for his dedication to his detective work.
