Caxton Cares: Stitching together warmth, one square at a time

ALTHOUGH only a few eager crocheters pitched up for the Caxton Cares Square by Square workshop on March 1, it was still successful as at least seven blankets were already donated.

“We only need another 493 blankets to reach our goal,” joked the editor of the South Coast/ Southlands SUN, Roelien D’Amico. Those who did join the group said it was a fantastic learning experience.

Priscilla “Waffle” Murray, arrived with a crocheted piece that did not resemble a square, but at the end of the day, she left with a perfectly crochet block. Thulie “Speedy” Mkhize, said she crocheted as a youngster and enjoyed the tutoring provided by Gerda “Undo” Macgregor. She managed to leave with two-and-a-half perfectly crochet blocks.

Even Shereen “The Heart” Maharaj, sales manager of the SUN, managed to teach Priscilla a few stiches as well, even though she also just started learning a new craft. “Not to forget Aletta “Donut” Leslie, who also jumped in to show me a few shortcuts to some of the more complicated stiches.

A huge shout-out to Giselle’s Kitchen, who sponsored some delicious eats to ensure the crochers’ energy levels remain high, as well as to the anonymous sponsor for the bags of wool she graciously donated. Any project needs a few energetic, eager and enthusiastic community members to ensure that we reach our goals, and if everybody who said they are assisting us manage to donate a blanket or two, we will be able to reach our goal,” said Roelien.

“I am eternally grateful for the support we receive. This project aims to assist our elderly residents to stay warm during the colder months, and because this is made with love, our blessing will spread to them as well.” In order to complete 500 blanket, 21 000 knitted or crochet blocks, 15cm x 15cm, are needed. The blocks will be sewn together to make a 90cm knee blanket.

Donation boxes for wool are available at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff or at the SUN office in Amanzimtoti. The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July.

There are a few spot prizes up for grabs. The person who donated the most wool, or crocheted or knitted the most blocks, will win a special treat sponsored by Pia Health and Beauty Spa, Amanzimtoi. There are also breakfast vouchers from Clear Waters Spur in Beach Road up for grabs.
