Spec-tacular day at Junagarth Primary School

Learners at Junagarth Primary School are equipped with a vision for success thanks to free eye-test screenings done by Africa Eye Institute.

SMILES and laughter filled Junagarth Primary School corridors recently as the African Eye Institute gave free vision screenings to learners at the school.

The screenings were part of the institute’s continuing “Giving Sight, Giving Hope” programme that aims to improve children’s learning by identifying and treating undiagnosed vision problems.

Throughout the day, African Eye Institute eye care professionals worked diligently with the learners, most of whom had never had an eye test before. It was the first time ever that their eyes were tested.

School representative Trevan Soobramoney said that learners did not know that they needed glasses.

“When they tried on the prescription glasses, a lot of them were surprised that they could now read the board clearly for the first time,” he said.

The group donated glasses to learners in need, a gesture that put a smile on the learners’ faces and helped to alleviate some of the burden teachers experienced with children facing challenges created by issues with vision.

“There was a feeling of excitement and gratitude in the air. We are so grateful to the African Eye Institute, as they have definitely changed the lives of some learners,” he said.
