Carried out between May 13 and May 16, the campaign generated a high turnout among pet owners in Merebank, Wentworth, Austerville and The Bluff, with 1118 dogs and 50 cats given rabies vaccinations.
The campaign was part of ongoing efforts by the Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services Directorate to help avert the outbreak of rabies, a deadly, yet avoidable viral disease.

Queen Duma, a Department of Agriculture animal health technician, was pleased with the turnout of people and how the campaign went.
“The rabies vaccination drive was very successful, and I am pleased with the results, especially in the Wentworth, Austerville and Merebank areas, the attendance was great. We as the eThekwini State Veterinarian’s office appreciate and thank all the pet owners for coming through our vaccination drive; in that way they are assisting us in preventing and controlling the rabies disease,” said Duma.

The vaccination exercise was held in various locations, parks, open spaces, and community centres to make it easier for residents to access the service. The exercise also carried out public education on rabies prevention, proper pet care, and the necessity of annual immunisation.
