Rescued pups bounce back at Blue Bundu Brigade after neglect [Video]

Blue Bundu Brigade is elated to see that two pups rescued after a case of neglect earlier this year are looking healthy and growing.

TWO puppies, rescued in early February by the Blue Bundu Brigade from a heart-wrenching scenario, are now healthy and thriving following good intensive care, proper diet and commitment by the animal rescue team.

Karen Janisch, one of the Blue Bundu Brigade directors, explained that the pups were surrendered severely underweight and with maggot-infested wounds.

“They were skin and bones when they arrived. It was heartbreaking,” she said.

Now six months old, the puppies have recovered amazingly.

“The pups have been on a special diet to boost their Gi tract. Their tummies were very compromised. We placed them on a special GI formulated porridge to help bind their tummies. Once the tummies had settled, puppies were placed onto puppy pellets which they did very well on,” she said.

The turnaround of the pups has been nothing short of miraculous, packing on pounds, regaining strength and displaying a marked improvement in looks and energy levels.

Janisch added that the puppies were dewormed several times to get rid of hookworm which was prevalent.

They were fed three small meals a day, loaded with 28% protein pellets and supplemented with vitamins to build their immune systems. This helped them gain a healthy weight and undergo a visible change in their appearance and energy levels.

Even though the story is heartwarming, Janisch emphasised that help is still required.

“We go through about 80kg of dog food every day. We are constantly in need of financial help to sustain this level of care, even if it’s bit by bit,” she said.

How to help:

Blue Bundu Brigade offers several ways for the public to get involved and support their cause:

  • Sponsor a dog for R350/month for six months.
  • Join their ‘Santa Clause for Paws’ fundraising campaign by sponsoring a dog for R250.
  • Help fund sterilisation, which costs R1 000 per dog – many female dogs housed currently are in urgent need.
  • Participate in two raffles happening at the end of June — one for dog lovers and one for cat lovers. Tickets are R20 each or R100 for six (one free).
  • Purchase Bruno gravies in biltong, boerewors, chicken, or lamb flavours for R39.99 each. A portion of proceeds directly supports rescue dog centres.
