Spike in car thefts raises alarm in Merewent

According to police crime analyst, Constable Ntombifuthi Mbongwa, most of the reported cases involve vehicles stolen from public parking lots.

THE police in Wentworth have sent out a stern warning to the public over a noticeable increase in motor vehicle thefts in the Merewent policing precinct in recent months.

According to the police crime analyst  stationed at Wentworth police station, Constable Ntombifuthi Mbongwa, most of the reported cases involve vehicles stolen from public parking lots, sidewalks, and residential verges.

“The thefts commonly occur during the early morning hours, between 00:30 and 06:00. The most targeted vehicles are sedans, particularly those used for transporting school children and employees to and from work,” said Mbongwa.

Mbongwa said the police have observed that criminals often use the following methods to gain access to and steal vehicles:

  • Breaking or tampering with door locks.
  • Using remote jammers to interfere with locking systems. Once inside, tampering with the ignition to start the vehicle.

Safety tips for motorists

  • To reduce the risk of vehicle theft, the Wentworth police advises the public to follow these safety precautions:
  • Always park in well-lit areas.
  • Whenever possible, park inside secured premises and lock all gates.
  • Ensure vehicle alarm systems are activated. Double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked.
  • Avoid leaving valuable items such as cellphones, laptops, or jewellery visible inside your vehicle.
  • Never leave your car idling while opening gates. Instead, turn off the engine, take the keys with you, and, if possible, arrange for someone to open the gate.
  • If you suspect you are being followed, do not stop. Drive to the nearest police station and report the incident. Try to note the suspect vehicle’s description, including make, colour, registration number, and the number of occupants.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings when entering or exiting your property. Report any suspicious individuals loitering in your area.

The public is urged to report any suspicious activity or incidents of vehicle theft. Contact CrimeStop at 08600 10111 or the Wentworth Police Station at 079 500 1167.
