Student released on bail in drug possession case

The police recovered drugs with an estimated street value of over R200 000 that were destined for the Wentworth area.

A MAN allegedly caught in possession of drugs with an estimated street value at over R200 000 was released on bail at the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently.

Felix Ahanonul (32) was granted R5000 bail, after police allegedly found him in possession of methamphetamine drugs. The accused is a student at a tertiary institution in Durban.

He was arrested during a joint operation conducted by police in Wentworth.

The police sting operation involved the following units:
  • Wentworth Metro Street Crime unit,
  • Wentworth Crime Prevention unit,
  • Durban Public Order Police,
  • Provincial drug and firearm unit

“The police had received information about the drugs destined for the Wentworth area. The members waited for the suspect on Austerville Drive, where he was expected to pass on his way to the flat where the drugs were to be delivered,” police said in a statement.

The court heard that the police kept an observation along Austerville Drive where the delivery was expected. During the operation, they identified the suspect’s car and stopped the driver.

Upon searching, the police found methamphetamine drugs wrapped in small packets. When questioned about the drugs, the suspect led them to his flat in Umbilo where additional drugs were found stashed in packets.

The suspect was charged for dealing and possession of drugs. The police also impounded the suspect’s car.

The matter was adjourned for further evidence to be presented in court. The accused is expected to reappear in court soon.
