Community kitchen in Ward 64 reopened
The community kitchen in Montclair has been closed since the beginning of the year, until it was recently reopened by caring residents.
THE Ward 64 community kitchen reopened its doors at Traybang Hall in Montclair, once again serving up hot food and a welcoming space for the poor.

The initiative has been relaunched by a team of dedicated women from the Ward who believe that the community required such a project. The kitchen operates every Thursday from 12:00 to 13:00.
One of the women involved in the reopening, Nonkululeko Hlongwane-Mhlongo, said while the kitchen is Montclair-based, the plan is to also open community kitchens in neighbouring communities.
“Our hope is that in time we will see more community kitchens being established in different areas. Food brings people together, and we don’t want anyone to be left out,” said Hlongwane-Mhlongo.
Foods offered are primarily vegetables and are halal. On top of a plate of food, residents are also offered a drink and the chance to share some good conversations.
The reopening has been welcomed by locals already, many of whom rely on the project as a lifeline during hard times. For the women who restarted the project, the task is not merely one of offering sustenance, but of reinforcing communal ties.
The community kitchen:
- Day: Every Thursday.
- Time: 12:00-13:00
- Venue: Traybang Memorial Hall, Montclair, 199 Kenyon Howden Road.
