Police urge vigilance amid spike in vehicle thefts

Wentworth police are urging the public to stay alert as motor vehicle thefts, particularly targeting delivery vehicles, are increasing.

POLICE in Wentworth are appealing to the public to be vigilant as theft of motor vehicles is on the rise again, with light delivery vehicles specifically being targeted.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede urged the public to avoid parking in isolated areas as this tends to attract criminals.

“The police have noticed the rise in theft of motor vehicles within the Merewent police station precinct. The vehicle owners are urged by police to adhere to the following safety tips,” said Gumede.

Safety tips:
  • Park in a well lit place
  • Ensure your vehicle is locked after parking
  • Activate your vehicle alarm system
  • Check your vehicle doors before leaving, in order to satisfy yourself it is locked.
  • Do not leave any valuables on top of the seats, or things which may attract suspects to break into your vehicle to reach your valuable items.

Gumede added, “Suspects are tampering with door locking devices by breaking it. Once gaining access they will tamper with the ignition.”

The items which are being stolen from vehicles:
  • Vehicle batteries
  • Car tyres
  • Cellphone, watches
  • Laptops and bags
  • Radio systems and speakers.

The police urge the community to be vigilant at all times, and report suspicious vehicles driving around the neighborhood or suspicious persons aimlessly walking around residences.

Take note of the vehicle make, number plates, number of occupants, how they are dressed, complexion etc, and report immediately to the police and security companies which are servicing your areas.
