Scouts’ Meerkat division calls for community help

The First Royal Scouts' newly introduced Meerkat division is appealing to the community for donations of materials to upgrade a home for them.

THE First Royal Scouts recently introduced its new Meerkats division, with the specific aim of familiarising younger children with the principles of scouting.

As a key component of this division, various scout patrols committed their service hours to the task of converting the wooden structure by the scout’s main hall into a specialised area for the Meerkats.

Tash Pretorius, a scout leader, said that the Meerkats division was designed to accommodate children ranging from five to six and a half years of age. “It was a way to introduce these young members to the core values of scouting, keeping the activities fun and engaging,” said Pretorius.

Helping the young

The patrol’s goal was to turn that building into a space that was not only safe but also welcoming and practical, a place where the Meerkats could gather, learn and engage in various activities.

Materials needed:

To bring this plan to fruition, the scouts are reaching out to the public for assistance with the materials and items needed for the renovation.

  • Wood
  • Nails
  • Glass to replace some broken windows
  • Paint and brushes
  • Cupboards for storage

“Beyond that, they would also need some child-friendly furnishings, specifically small plastic tables and chairs, which would be perfect for arts and crafts sessions,” said Pretorius.

The project is not just about helping the new Meerkat members, it is also a way for the older scouts leading the effort to develop their own sense of responsibility and teamwork.

Pretorius extended her thanks in advance to those willing to assist.
