Grosvenor Girls learners in battle of queens of the checkered board

Learners at Grosvenor Girls High School battled it out in a classic inter-grade knockout style chess tournament.

STRATEGIC play and plenty of fun set the tone for the day at the intergrade chess tournament at Grosvenor Girls High School recently.

Eighteen learners competed in two divisions, beginner and experienced, in a knockout tournament which saw them battle across several rounds and test their focus under pressure.

Senrika Eshwarduth, chess club teacher, said that the tournament reflected the growth of the school club.

“Our chess club has been growing, and our girls were eager to play competitively. It was great to see the enthusiasm and the ability on display,” said Eshwarduth

Following a string of exciting matches, the beginner tournament was won by Jorja Govender, followed by Kelebohile Thakgodi in second place. In the experienced division chess captain Jordyne Stork was the winner, followed by vice-captain Hannah Dladla in second place.

Eshwarduth extended her thanks to everyone who had contributed to making the day a success.
