Excitement builds for Wentworth bowling tourney

Wentworth Bowling Club backs Bowls South Africa's Bowlers with Disabilities initiative.

FRIDAY’s Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls at Wentworth Bowling Club proved to be a good pairing for Gees Dennis and Frank Gielink as they showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels and stormed ahead to accumulate a +27 shot difference and claim the top podium spot.

In second place with a +19 score were Graham Bransby, Dave Carroll and Johan Nel. Rob Davies, Phil Hill and Raj Pillay left with the sportsmen’s prize.

James Hopkins made the right choice on the raffle sheet and left with a sizeable salt beef for the weekend supper table and Gary Lelong, Rajen Pillay, Albert van Niekerk and Nico Heymans all benefitted from the two 60/ 40 board draws.

This week sees the club’s regular monthly tournament being contested. On Thursday, November 25, bowlers will take to the green to contest for the R1 200 prize money in Spider’s Breakfast Trips and on Sunday, November 28, the battle will be to claim part of the R800 up for grabs in the Big Jim Pairs competition. Play starts at 09:00 on both days.

Bowls South Africa has named November Bowlers with Disabilities month and the club will hold spiders before play on both days. All monies collected will go to the National Council of and For Persons with Disabilities.

The Bowls South Africa Bowlers with Disabilities Nationals will be held in Durban next year and hopefully funds will assist those bowlers who need financial help with travel and accommodation costs. Anyone wanting to contribute can do so at the club.

The community is reminded of the Wednesday development bowls event held each week at 14:00. It is an opportunity to learn the basics of the sport with the help of friendly experienced bowlers.

The club has bowls and those participating must remember to wear flat shoes with minimum ripple on the sole.
