Chess player makes Merebank proud

Madhav won the medal in the U14 catergory. His contribution to the team's points earned him a second gold medal.

A CHESS player from Merebank, Madhav Puran has made his community proud after winning a gold medal at the recent South African Local Government games (Salga).

Madhav claimed gold in the U14 category and played a key role in helping the eThekwini Municipality chess team secure gold as the overall team winners.

Madhav won the medal in the U14 category. His contribution to the team’s points earned him a second gold medal.

His journey to success began at ward level, where he won both the ward and inter-ward competitions, followed by the victories at inter-district level. These achievements earned him eThekwini Municipality colours and the opportunity to represent the municipality at the Salga games.

His father, Ahdir Puran reflected proudly on his son’s growth.

“My son lost his very first game as a chess player. He came home and practised everyday. Today he is a champion. He is scheduled to participate in a tournament next year,” said Puran.

His parents are hopeful that he will progress to the next level and compete in another South African title.

Ward 68 sports confederation chairperson, Neil Oxford said, “To Madhav’s father and entire family, thank you for trusting us as the ward 68 sports confederation in making sure we take good care of your talented son. Thank you for walking this journey with us,” said Oxford.

He also thanked the teachers at Merebank Secondary School and coaches for training chess players.

“They must continue to be a blessing to more young and inspiring chess players.

“I would also like to thank Pastor Victor Kupsamy for his patience and leadership throughout the last six months,” Oxford added.
