Diarise the Emerald Cup date

Make sure you keep September 28 open, because the The Emerald Cup will be taking place at the Vaal Racecourse.

Into its ninth year, this feature race carries prize money totalling R600 000 and is Africa’s richest horse race on sand. The day will consist of a full race schedule including several feature races of which the Emerald Cup is the main highlight.

This Grade 2 race is run over a distance of 1450m on the Vaal sand track situated close to the banks of the Vaal River. Previous victors Meadow Magic, The Mouseketeer, Iron Curtain and Phunyuka are all etched on the honour roll.

Emerald Cup 2012 saw trainer Mike de Kock get his second Emerald Cup victory as Meadow Magic, ridden by Anton Marcus beat Beacon Flare by a neck. De Kock’s previous win was in 2005 with Hilti. Can he take his win tally to three this year?

The race is a spectacular day out for the entire family. Entertainment for all ages takes place at the Vaal Racetrack boasting horse racing, live music and activities for the little ones. Braai facilities right next to the racetrack takes viewing to the next level while thoroughbreds thunder down the track.

Emerald Resort and Casino CEO Martin Rice says, “Not only is The Emerald Cup one of our premier events during the year, it has grown into one of South Africa’s most anticipated horseracing events on the calendar which traditionally attracts strong competitors.

“It is also a great opportunity to showcase the local Vaal and Sedibeng municipality and enhance the flow of local tourism to the Vaal region.”
