Durban July winner Winchester Mansion gets Charity Mile nod

Top three-year-olds included as candidates.

Hollywoodbets Durban July winner Winchester Mansion is among the 37 runners entered for the R1-million Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile.

The Grade 2 race over 1600m will be run on the Standside track at Turffontein on Saturday 28 October.

Also among the nominations are Cousin Casey, who will be having his first run for trainer Sean Tarry, last year’s Betway Summer Cup winner Puerto Manzano and two-time defending champion Bingwa.

Perhaps one of the most exciting nominations is last season’s Equus Champion Two-Year-Old Sandringham Summit. Trainer David Nieuwenhuizen has already earmarked the Grade 2 Jonsson Workwear Dingaans over 1600m at Turffontein as the target for this three-year-old son of Gimmethegreenlight, but he will need a warm-up run prior to the 25 November race.

He is, however, also an early entry for the Grade 3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m for three-year-olds to be run at the Charity Mile meeting.

Also among the entries is another top three-year-old in Main Defender, who recently pulverised his opposition in his comeback run, the Betway Joburg Spring Challenge over 1450m.

Tony Peter’s charge was the runner-up to Sandringham Summit in the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Winchester Mansion and Puerto Manzano are among the entries for the Betway Summer Cup on 25 November but cannot be ignored in a race of this nature.

As it is a handicap they will be carrying a fair amount of weight, however. Bingwa is a 1600m specialist and no doubt trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren will be hoping his charge will be able to pull off an extremely rare feat and win this race for the third successive year.

This is obviously his mission, but he did run disappointingly in the Spring Challenge although the six-year-old Pathfork gelding did not have the best of starts in that race.

Of the fillies, Bless My Stars tops that list and while she is also likely to be aimed at the Summer Cup, Tarry will be looking for a forward showing from his charge. Lady Of Power, winner of the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (Grade 2), is another filly to get a nomination.

Supplementary entries close at 9am tomorrow after which the weights will be announced. Declarations must be made by 11am on Thursday.
