Racing tip: An early double up for grabs in Cape race

There are some unraced runners in this field so keep an eye on any significant betting moves.

While today’s race meeting at Hollywoodbets Durbanville is not the most exciting card ever assembled there do seem to be some decent bets on the card.

Bettors should be able to build up a decent kitty early on with a double on Races 1 and 2.

While Strata has had a number of chances, trainer Candice Bass-Robinson is unlikely to find a better race for the three-year-old daughter of Canford Cliffs than this Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1000m.

This is a somewhat moderate field and Strata has the best form by quite a long way. She is well drawn at No 4 and has decent form at the course with a second and two third from four starts.

All of those placed runs were over this distance with her lone unplaced start coming over 1250m where she did have an excuse as she pulled up short.\

Aldo Domeyer takes the ride. There are some unraced runners in this field so keep an eye on any significant betting moves.

Trainer Justin Snaith provides the second leg in Race 2, which is a Maiden Plate over 1400m, where he sends out well-bred Lightning Glow. He was a R350,000 yearling purchase, and finished an encouraging third on debut over 1200m as a juvenile back in May.

He confirmed the promise of that introduction on his reappearance last month. This Vercingetorix colt, who is out of a Jet Master mare, was drawn No 11 of 14 runners that day but ran on smartly to finish fourth just 2.30 lengths off the winner.

On pedigree, and judging by the evidence of that display, Lightning Glow should have a lot more to offer over 1400m with improved fitness on his side from a favourable No 5 gate under Grant van Niekerk
