While some 50 000 plus spectators packed into Greyville for this year’s running of the Vodacom Durban July, a select group of 18 will have a unique view of the race.

For the 18 jockeys, this is the Holy Grail. The R3.5 million spectacle is arguably the biggest in South Africa and the roll of honour includes a list of distinguished equine performers.

About what it was like to line up for the Grade One contest run on the first Saturday in July every year, former top jockey Brett Smith said yesterday: “It’s cut-throat and it’s hard. Nobody gives an inch. You hesitate for one second and the gap closes. It’s the one everyone wants to win.”

We report to you as it happens. Below are live Twitter reports from the 2015 Durban July.

Fashion steals the limelight at Durban July

By 2pm, the hot Durban heat was the perfect companion for the scorching fashion at the 119th Vodacom Durban July.

This is the time when celebrities (always fashionably late) are still scarce, and general entry spectators can flaunt their garb for this year’s July theme, Captains Table.

At the Durban Fashion Fair marquee, up-and-coming designers gathered mid-afternoon to vie for the best dressed title.

Although not directly related to the theme, Zanele Shezi took inspiration from the Nkandla Homestead.  She flaunted a thatch hat paired with a grass handbag. Considering that the firepool have been a hot topic, Shezi certainly knew how to grab attention.

Denelle Ince, dressed by designer Ayasmin Saanglae, took a technicolour approach to the theme, with giant pink lashes to boot.

Dressed by Phalaborwa-based designer Bryetta, Nomsa Theaedi was statuesque in a lime green and orange gown, with a giant conk functioning as her handbag.

Celebrity spotters at the SABC marquee, and this year’s biggest marquee for Jack Daniels, Boomtown, have been restless.

Celebrities are few and far between, but considering the day’s main race is set to take place just before 5pm, they are sure to walk into a waiting and hungry media congregation just before the starting gun.

Rumour is that current Miss World Rolene Strauss and current Miss South Africa Liezl laurie will be at the starting line for the main race.
