Joshua can wear Michaelmas crown

By Mark van Deventer

If searching for a live contender at decent odds, then talented Joshua’s Crown is worth considering as a long-shot play.

The lightly weighted gelding loves soft conditions and has acquitted himself reasonably well since being tried over more ground. From a low draw he may be able to work out a ground-saving trip under smart rider Alec Forbes and get involved in the finish.

Dennis Drier has two horses with legit claims. Top Mark is competitively handicapped when compared to accomplished and classy topweight Gold Onyx, who won a good race last time. Drier’s other runner, King Neptune, should also relish the softer ground and is enjoys this course.

Concatenation is hard to assess but must be factored into calculations as a three-time winner from just six starts. He battles with unsoundness, yet has hinted at decent ability when beating weaker rivals and is a Summer Cup nominee.

Many punters swear blind allegiance to “Superman Marcus” – a high percentage rider who perennially wins on between 20% and 30% of his mounts. His fans will loyally support his well-performed mount, Roman Wall, who ran second in this race last year.

Exotic players are advised to load up. This is a tough handicap where jockeyship and a good judgment of pace could be crucial on the narrowed track configuration.
