Phumelela gives R1.1m to help abused horses
Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Limited has donated more than R1 million to the Highveld Horse Care Unit over the past 12 months, demonstrating its commitment to the organisation and its work in equine welfare.
Phumelela’s company secretary Rushen Gopaul presents Highveld Horse Care Unit managing director Bev Seabourne with a cheque for R1.1 million.
The Highveld Horse Care Unit (HHCU), started up by the National Thoroughbred Trust, performs a number of functions, including the rehabilitation and rehoming of equines and investigations in to cruelty complaints of horses and donkeys.
In total, the HHCU has received R1.1 million in cash and a truck to the value of R682,000 from Phumelela in the last 12 months.
As an organisation that relies solely on donations managing director Bev Seabourne says the HHCU would not exist without the support of Phumelela.
“They have supported our work since the inception of HHCU in 1991,” she said. “As a result of hard economic times, we have been battling financially to keep our heads above water and Phumelela yet again came to our rescue.
“As a result of their generosity, we are now able to continue with our outreach work in previously disadvantaged areas.”
Phumelela’s company secretary Rushen Gopaul says it’s important that horseracing is seen to support such organisations.
“Phumelela is pleased to make a sizeable contribution to the HHCU, who for years have been championing the greater cause of the equine community.”
Seaborne says the money will be distributed between the Eastern Cape, North West and Limpopo provinces to address a number of issues, including vaccination and de-worming as well as investigations into traditional racing and equine cruelty. The money will also be used for the Unit’s ongoing costs.
