Regal Rose a standout banker

The first R505,000 carryover of the weekend could see the Pick 6 pool at Turffontein tomorrow soar to R2.2 million but punters will not find it an easy bet to win because a number of the races look open.

There are two standout bankers, the first being trainer Stanley Ferreira’s charge Regal Rose in Race 4 over 1000m.

She is drawn at No 12 but will not get an easier opportunity to shed her maiden tag because none of her rivals even placed last time they ran. Those taking straight bets should watch the betting on the first-timers.

Regal Rose has placed in three of her four career starts, finishing second in her last two outings. In her penultimate start she found Icelandic Fire just a head too good over 1000m at the Vaal and was then trounced by well-backed first-timer Shepard One over 1000m on the standside track. Running Sensation, her main rival with exposed form, finished 1.75 lengths behind her that day and is now 2.5kg worse off.

Pick 6 players could also take a chance on Dover Beach in the final leg, a FM 71 Handicap over 1450m. Like Regal Rose she will be ridden by Gavin Lerena and he will again have his work cut out from No 13 draw.

Dover Beach, however, has some good form to her name. She placed behind Magroora in her first two starts but made no mistake over this course and distance in her third career outing, when beating City Of Athens by 2.50 lengths.

The Mullins Bay filly followed up over 1400m at Turffontein in her next start with a three-length win over Striking Alice, who has battled subsequently.

Azzie then sent her to Durban for the Golden Slipper but Dover Beach never got a blow in and finished nearly eight lengths adrift of winner For The Lads. This is a much weaker field and it would come as no surprise to see her get back on the winning trail.

Miss Stingray is also not well drawn and failed last time out, but normally runs well over this course and distance. Her most recent run over the trip came in her penultimate start, when she stayed on strongly for third, two lengths behind Like The Willow. In that race she had Perfect Winter (1.5kg worse off), Speed Dial (1kg better off) and Forever After behind her.

Royal Wings has placed in her last two starts, the latest when just failing to beat Breathless over 1400m on the standside track. She beat Perfect Winter, Fun City, Striking Alice and Miss Stingray that day and is better off with all four, courtesy of Franklin Maleking’s 2.5kg apprentice allowance.

Sing The Blues is another to consider. Although better on a sand surface and having her first outing over this distance, she was not beaten far when sixth behind Extraordinaire over 1000m at the Vaal in her penultimate start.

Queen Eliza could be anything. She won her debut well, beating Lady Justice by a length over 1160m on the standside track. She, too, tries further.
